Prepare for your next vehicle inspection
Is your German periodic technical inspection due? At Milster & Bahls GmbH, you can plan the preparation and inspection appointment for your motorhome or caravan together.
The Hauptuntersuchung, or HU, is carried out on our premises by external inspection engineers, by appointment. For motorhomes subject to emissions testing, we also take the required Abgasuntersuchung, or AU, into account. We discuss the services needed and how to prepare for your workshop visit.
On request, we can check your motorhome or caravan for identifiable defects beforehand. Any necessary repairs are discussed before you authorise them. The inspection body determines the official HU result.

Motorhomes and caravans have different requirements
Include the vehicle type, model and maximum authorised mass in your enquiry. This helps us identify the appropriate appointment and confirm the arrangements.
HU with AU where required
The motorhome inspection takes its specific configuration into account. For vehicles subject to emissions testing, the AU forms part of the HU.
Mention any known issues when arranging your visit, such as warning messages, lighting problems or unusual braking behaviour.
HU for your caravan
Caravans also require a periodic technical inspection. A caravan trailer without its own propulsion engine does not require an AU emissions test.
Let us know whether you need an inspection appointment alone or would also like a preparatory workshop check. We agree the drop-off arrangements and time required in advance.
Discuss known issues before the inspection
A preparatory check can help identify apparent defects before the inspection appointment. We agree which areas to check based on your motorhome or caravan and the information you provide.
If repairs are needed, we explain the recommended work and how costs will be calculated. You decide whether to authorise it. A workshop check does not replace the HU or guarantee a pass.
Explore maintenance & inspectionWhat to tell us in advance
Known problems: Describe warning lights, faulty lamps or other issues as clearly as possible.
Time in storage: Mention if the motorhome or caravan has not been used for an extended period.
Modifications and accessories: Tell us about relevant changes and equipment fitted later.
Existing inspection report: If defects have already been recorded, we need the report to plan further work.
Prepare the documents and handover
Please address missing documents before the appointment where possible. We will discuss which records are needed in your case.
Registration document
Have your German registration certificate Part I ready. Its details help identify your motorhome or caravan correctly.
Inspection records
Bring any available HU reports. For a reinspection, the report listing the identified defects is particularly important.
Supporting documents
Have documentation for modified or retrofitted components ready where applicable. Discuss any questions with us before your visit.
Access & keys
Agree on drop-off and collection. Bring the required keys and ensure the areas to be inspected can be accessed.
HU, gas testing and habitation servicing are different services
Testing an LPG installation is a separate inspection and is not automatically included in your HU appointment. The HU also does not replace servicing of living area equipment or a habitation damp check. Please request any additional services explicitly. We will clarify in advance which work or inspections we can offer or arrange.
An appointment with an external inspection body
External inspection engineers carry out the official HU. We will tell you which inspection body is handling your appointment when confirming the arrangements.
We organise your workshop visit and the agreed preparatory work. Where possible, plan ahead of a longer journey to allow time for any additional work that may be needed.

The report and next steps
The inspection report records the result. If defects are identified, we discuss the required workshop repairs and how they could be carried out.
If a reinspection is needed, follow the requirements and deadlines stated in the report. Repairs and the reinspection appointment are agreed separately; we explain additional costs before you authorise the work.
HU & AU service FAQs
Who carries out the periodic technical inspection?
External inspection engineers carry out the HU on our premises. Our workshop handles the agreed preparation and organisation. The inspection body determines the result.
Can I request a preparatory workshop check?
Yes. Request the check when arranging your appointment. The scope and any repairs are agreed with you. This check does not replace the HU or guarantee a pass.
Which documents should I bring?
Bring your registration certificate Part I, existing inspection reports and any relevant modification documents. We clarify any further documentation requirements when arranging the appointment.
Is a gas inspection automatically included?
No. Gas testing is a separate inspection. Please request it separately so we can establish whether and how it can be arranged.
How much does the HU and AU appointment cost?
Costs depend on the vehicle type and services required. Inspection costs, preparatory checks and possible repairs are explained when you enquire or before you authorise the work.
Can I wait during the inspection?
Please mention this in advance. Whether you can wait on site depends on the appointment and scope of work. We agree drop-off and collection arrangements with you.
What happens if defects are found?
We discuss the inspection report and possible repairs with you. Any required work and a reinspection, where needed, are arranged separately.
Is my preferred appointment immediately confirmed?
No. The form sends an enquiry first. We check availability and confirm the appointment after agreeing the services required.
Plan your next inspection in good time
